چکیده

Ca ii λλ3934, 3969 absorbers, which are likely to be a subset of damped Lyman α systems, are the most dusty quasar absorbers known, with an order of magnitude more extinction in E(B−V) than other absorption systems. There is also evidence that Ca ii absorbers trace galaxies with more ongoing star-formation than the average quasar absorber. Despite this, relatively little is known in detail about these unusual absorption systems. Here we present the first high resolution spectroscopic study of 19 Ca ii quasar absorbers, in the range 0.6 6 zabs 6 1.2, with Ca ii λ3934 equivalent widths, W3934 0 > 0.2 Å. Their general elemental depletion patterns are found to be similar to measurements in the warm halo phase of the Milky Way (MW) and Magellanic Clouds interstellar medium. Dust depletions and α-enrichments profiles of subsamples of 7 and 3 absorbers, respectively, are measured using a combination of Voigt profile fitting and apparent optical depth techniques. Deviations in [Cr/Zn] ∼ 0.3 ± 0.1 dex and in [Si/Fe] & 0.8 ± 0.1 dex are detected across the profile of one absorber, which we attribute to differential dust depletion. The remaining absorbers have < 0.3 dex (3σ limit) variation in [Cr/Zn], much like the general DLA population, though the dustiest Ca ii absorbers, those with W3934 0 > 0.7 Å, remain relatively unprobed in our sample. A limit on electron densities in Ca ii absorbers, ne < 0.1 cm−3, is derived using the ratio of neutral and singly ionised species and assuming a MW-like radiation field. These electron densities may imply hydrogen densities sufficient for the presence of molecular hydrogen in the absorbers. The Ca ii absorber sample comprises a wide range of velocity widths, ∆v90 = 50 − 470 km s−1, and velocity structures, thus a range of physical models for their origin, from simple discs to galactic outflows and mergers, would be required to explain the observations.

Selecting damped Lyman - α systems through Ca II absorption . I : Dust depletions and reddening at z ∼ 1

We use the average E(B−V) and Zn II column densities of a sample of z ∼ 1 Ca II λλ3935, 3970 absorption line systems selected from the fourth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)to show that on average, with conservative assumptions regarding metallicities and dust-to-gas ratios, they contain column densities of neutral hydrogen greater than the damped Lyman-α (DLA) limit. We pro...

Evidence for dust reddening in DLAs identified through CaII(H&K) absorption

We present a new sample of 31 Ca II (H&K) λλ3935, 3970 absorption line systems with 0.84 < zabs < 1.3 discovered in the spectra of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 3 quasars, together with an analysis of their dust content. The presence of Calcium absorption together with measurements of the Mg II λ2796, Fe II λ2600 and Mg I λ2853 lines lead to the conclusion that the majority of ou...

A Balmer-line Broad Absorption Line Quasar

I report the discovery of blueshifted broad absorption line (BAL) troughs in at least six transitions of the Balmer series of hydrogen (Hβ to H9) and in Ca II, Mg II and excited Fe II in the quasar SDSS J125942.80+121312.6. This is only the fourth active galactic nucleus known to exhibit Balmer absorption, all four in conjunction with low-ionization BAL systems containing excited Fe II. The sub...

Chemical abundances in the young galaxy at z = 2 . 309 towards PHL 957

We present high-resolution UES spectra of the quasar PHL 957 obtained for studying the foreground Damped Lyα galaxy at z=2.309. Measurements of absorption lines lead to accurate abundance determinations of Fe, S and N which complement measurements of Zn, Cr and Ni already available for this system. We find [Fe/H]=−2.0± 0.1, [S/H]=−1.54± 0.06 and [N/H]=−2.76± 0.07. The ratio [Fe/Zn]=−0.44 provid...
